Jack followed Nick deeper into the facility, praying they didn’t get hit from behind. Nick waved at him to stand flat against the wall and produced a silver canister from his vest. He pulled the pin and lobbed it down the corridor. Jack heard a clunk and a clatter as the device hit the deck, followed by a pop. Acrid smoke filled his nostrils, and Nick charged. A few seconds passed and the sprinklers activated, spraying him with filthy, yellow water that had probably sat in the pipes for twenty or thirty years. As the spray cleared the corridor of the smoke, Jack stuck his head out and saw Nick had just laid out three guards and was disappearing through a doorway. Jack inspected the bodies.

Huh. He left them alive. Mercy’s a rare thing in this fallen world. Even weirder, for a schizo.

Jack pocketed one of the Glocks from an unconscious guard and patted them down for ammo. Wonder of wonders, they both had spare magazines. Short, fat magazines that held short, fat bullets. He pocketed three of them. He took a knee, unloaded and cleared the pistol by racking the slide against the heel of his boot, and clucked disapprovingly. Dummy hadn’t even had a round chambered, despite all the blaring over the PA. Apparently “proper weapons handling” was yet another thing scrubbed when the so-called guards went into the imprinter. That, or they didn’t trust the weapon chambered since it lacked a manual safety. The pistol was a Glock 36, small, even though the bullets were not. Jack checked the base of the rounds and nodded. They were .45s. The rounds looked almost comical in such a small, slender pistol. The mags didn’t hold many rounds, either.

He racked the slide a few more times on the sole of his boot to ensure it glided smoothly, then set the magazine on the deck and lowered the pistol onto the mag to reseat it. Once more, he racked the slide, this time to chamber the round, and then put the gun into the mesh pocket on the exterior of his satchel, in easy reach.

Jack leaned into the next room and heard the wet, heavy thuds of a brawl.

“You could’ve warned me!” Nick shouted. Jack started to protest but stopped. Nick was talking to his imaginary friend again and beating up what sounded like a dozen people at once. Jack decided perhaps the pistol belonged in his hand instead of the satchel, drew it, and crept closer.

He got to the door just as Nick charged the last three standing guards. One swung a massive, two-handed sledge at him. Nick slipped inside, wrenched the weapon free, and popped its former owner in the forehead with the butt-end. Jack saw the boxcutter, but Nick was moving too fast and blocked the shot, so Jack just kept the pistol trained on the hollow man in case he stepped clear. Nope. Nick accepted a slash across his leg to smash the guy across the head with the sledge’s handle.
